Mole Hot Cocoa: A Spicy Hot Cocoa Made with Broth

Hot cocoa, but make it mole. This rich, velvety cup balances the deep comfort of cocoa with a subtle kick of cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, and paprika—spices that whisper warmth rather than shout. Our grass-fed beef bone broth adds quiet depth and nutrients that make this indulgent drink feel as wholesome as it is decadent. It's sweet, spicy, savory, and soul-soothing all at once.

Makes one 8-oz beverage.

Ingredients

  • 4 oz Reclamation Grass-Fed Beef Bone Broth
  • 4 oz milk of choice
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • ⅛ tsp cayenne pepper
  • Pinch (or ¹⁄₁₆ tsp) cinnamon
  • Pinch cumin
  • Pinch paprika
  • Raw honey, to taste
  • Pinch coarse sea salt

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, bring bone broth and milk to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in cocoa powder and spices (except salt) until smooth and fragrant.
  3. Stir in honey to taste, continuing to heat until tiny bubbles appear at the sides.
  4. Remove from heat and froth with a handheld milk frother (or whisk vigorously).
  5. Pour into a mug, sprinkle with sea salt, and sip slowly—this is hot cocoa with layers.

Serving Notes

  • Top with a dollop of whipped cream or coconut cream for extra indulgence.
  • Add a candy cane garnish if you're feeling nostalgic.
  • Pair with shortbread or biscotti for a cozy afternoon snack.
  • Dial up the heat with an extra pinch of cayenne if you like it spicy.
  • Try it as a nightcap—warming, soothing, and just adventurous enough.
